Former Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Năstase welcomes the appointment of Nick Pietrowicz as Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in the Republic of Moldova: “he is a career diplomat, and his appointment ensures the maintenance of the minimum necessary diplomatic representation in Chișinău” – TRIBUNA informs.
“However, the fact that, over a year after the departure of Ambassador Kent Logsdon, the United States has not appointed a new ambassador to the Republic of Moldova sends a clear political signal. The Moldovan side has also failed to obtain the accreditation of the representative sent to Washington, known for his close ties with the current government. Together, these elements indicate a deterioration in bilateral relations, even if it is not officially recognized.
The political deadlock is also starting to be felt in the economic sphere. Since August 1, 2025, a series of trade tariffs imposed by the US in a global context are also affecting Moldovan exports. Although the measure does not exclusively target Moldova, the lack of an active dialogue with Washington reduces the chances that our country’s economic interests will be defended effectively. In the meantime, the government is avoiding the subject and prefers campaign actions, distributing electoral leaflets on the stairs of apartment buildings and visiting localities ignored for the rest of its mandate,” the politician said.
Andrei Năstase also said that a restoration of Moldovan-American relations remains possible, but cannot take place without a serious political effort, without professionalism and without a real will for dialogue. The extension of the current stagnation will deepen the political and economic costs for the Republic of Moldova.
