(ONE YEAR AGO) Ballot Draw for 3 Candidates

TRIBUNA continues its project presenting the political events that took place exactly one year ago. This time, we invite you to remember what happened on August 19, 2025.

Prime Minister’s Meeting

Prime Minister Dorin Recean discussed with representatives of several sectoral associations ways to harness the Republic of Moldova’s tourism potential, the challenges faced by organizations in the sector, and its development prospects.

Socialists’ Protest

In front of the Central Electoral Commission headquarters, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova held a protest against what it called the “discriminatory actions of PAS,” which, according to the party, restricted the voting rights of citizens from the left bank of the Dniester by opening only 10 polling stations for the September 28 parliamentary elections.

Speakers at the protest stressed that the right to vote is guaranteed by the Constitution and that citizens on both banks of the Dniester must be treated equally and with respect.

Police Information

The Police provided information about the protest held the previous evening by the “Șor” organization through intermediaries, involving minors and representatives of various ethnic communities who were allegedly promised illegal payments to create division and incite hatred near several public institutions and facilities in the capital.

The Police announced that 43 people had been documented and admitted that they had been promised money to take part in the protest.

Maia Sandu’s Message

President Maia Sandu issued a message regarding the peace talks in Washington involving U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders.

The head of state welcomed “the monumental effort made by President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington to end the bloodshed and pave the way toward peace in Ukraine and our region.”

Irina Vlah’s Appeal

Irina Vlah, leader of the Republican Party “Heart of Moldova,” said in a video post that she had publicly appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking them to consider the international recognition of the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova.

Accusations Against the Ministry of Justice

Lucian Rogac, the lawyer of Vladimir Plahotniuc, accused Moldova’s Ministry of Justice of using various legal tactics to delay Vladimir Plahotniuc’s extradition to the Republic of Moldova for as long as possible.

PLDM Statement

The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM), in a statement, condemned the Central Electoral Commission’s intention to reduce the number of polling stations for citizens from the left bank of the Dniester and warned about restrictions on electoral rights.

New Members Join PDMM

Rezina District President Teodor Cuculescu, together with a group of mayors and district and local councilors, officially announced that they were joining the Modern Democratic Party of Moldova (PDMM).

Decision of the Central Court of Appeal

The Central Court of Appeal ordered an interim measure restricting the activities of the “Renaissance,” “Chance,” “Force of Alternative and Salvation of Moldova,” and “Victory” parties until a ruling was issued in the case in which the Ministry of Justice sought to have the four parties declared successors to the “Șor” Political Party and dissolved.

Alexandru Machidon — Winner

Acting Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon won the competition for the position of Prosecutor General.

The Superior Council of Prosecutors held a public meeting at which the candidates for Prosecutor General were interviewed. Following the evaluation, the final results were announced: Victor Furtună — 8.23; Alexandru Machidon — 8.86 points.

Ion Ceban’s Meeting

Ion Ceban, leader of the National Alternative Movement Party, met with Nick Pietrowicz, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Moldova. They discussed the parliamentary elections and bilateral relations.

Renato Usatîi’s Statement

“Our Party” submitted to the Central Electoral Commission the required documents and candidate list for registration in the September 28 parliamentary elections. Party leader Renato Usatîi said he was personally taking responsibility for every candidate.

Moldova HiTech Park Project Announced

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Doina Nistor, together with Public Property Agency head Roman Cojuhari, presented the Moldova HiTech Park project at a press conference. It was described as the Republic of Moldova’s first advanced technology park and an economic and technological platform of national importance.

CEC Statement

Following the appearance of manipulated video footage allegedly showing a ballot paper for the September 28, 2025 parliamentary elections with a “VOTAT” stamp placed next to one electoral contestant, the Central Electoral Commission stated that the material was fake.

The CEC said its purpose was to mislead voters and undermine confidence in the electoral process.

Final Election Applications

During the day, the Central Electoral Commission received the final five applications for the registration of candidates for the position of Member of Parliament in the September 28, 2025 parliamentary elections.

“Our Party” submitted an application to register a list of 103 candidates. The Professionals’ Movement “Hope Надежда” submitted a list of 7 candidates.

Three potential independent candidates — Natalia Clevadî, Igor Ianac, and Tatiana Crețu — also submitted documents and signature lists to enter the electoral race.

CEC’s Election Summary: 50 Applications

The Central Electoral Commission announced that at 5:00 p.m. the deadline for submitting documents required to register candidates for the September 28, 2025 parliamentary elections had expired.

Between July 20 and August 19, the period established by electoral legislation for requesting the registration of parliamentary candidates, the CEC received 50 applications:

  • 25 applications from political parties;
  • 4 applications from electoral blocs;
  • 3 applications from independent candidates who had formed initiative groups;
  • 18 applications from potential independent candidates who announced that they would collect signatures independently.

As of August 19, 2025, the CEC had registered 12 electoral contestants: 7 political parties, 3 electoral blocs, and 2 independent candidates.

CEC Meeting

At its meeting, the Central Electoral Commission approved several decisions concerning the September 28, 2025 parliamentary elections.

The CEC established 2,150 representatives for each electoral contestant, distributed across all electoral constituencies in the country.

It also registered a list of 58 parliamentary candidates from the “Together” Electoral Bloc, formed by the Green Ecologist Party and the Change Party.

Ballot Draw for 3 Candidates

A draw was held to establish the preliminary order on the parliamentary election ballot for applicants who had submitted their registration requests on August 18, 2025.

Following the procedure, the preliminary order was established as follows:

  • Christian-Social Union of Moldova — position 24;
  • Modern Democratic Party of Moldova — position 25;
  • Dina Carpinschi, potential independent candidate — position 26.

Women in the 11th Parliament

The Parliament’s Communications Directorate announced that the 11th Parliament of the Republic of Moldova had reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and strengthening women’s participation in decision-making.

This legislature was marked by record female representation in Parliament, including in leadership positions. Following the July 2021 elections, 40 women won parliamentary mandates, representing approximately 40% of the legislature, while there were 61 men.

By the end of the mandate, Parliament consisted of 40 women and 60 men.

Olesea Tanasoglo in Comrat

Olesea Tanasoglo, a member of the National Political Council of the Republican Party “Heart of Moldova” and former vice-president of the Executive Committee of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, attended festive events in Comrat dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Gagauz autonomous republic. She congratulated the Gagauz people on the occasion.

Igor Dodon’s Message

Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, issued a congratulatory message on the occasion of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Vlad Filat’s Analysis

Vlad Filat, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, said that the government of the Party of Action and Solidarity had compromised the economic potential of the Republic of Moldova.

In an analysis, he compared GDP developments in 2010–2014 with those of the previous five years, concluding that “2020–2024 will go down in history as five lost years.”

Victoria Furtună’s Accusations

Victoria Furtună, leader of the “Greater Moldova” Party, accused the authorities of attempting to silence her through financial pressure after the State Tax Service decided to block another bank account in her name.

Visit to Tiraspol

At the end of his mandate, EU Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks visited Tiraspol, where he met with the region’s de facto leader, Vadim Krasnoselsky.

The two discussed stability in the region and the parliamentary elections scheduled for September.
