“This must be stated very clearly and firmly: this is a failure. It is the direct result of the way they have governed the Republic of Moldova — a failure both economically and socially,” said Vlad Filat, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, reports TRIBUNA.

According to him, all the salary increases being discussed today had previously been promised.

“Take teachers, for example. Before last year’s elections, they were clearly told: it is not possible this year, but starting September of next year there will be substantial salary increases. Well, September is just a few weeks away, and there is no money,” he said.

Vlad Filat said that, under normal circumstances, the result of effective governance should have been economic growth. Economic growth would have generated additional budget revenues, which would have made it possible to increase salaries in a natural and sustainable manner. However, this did not happen.

“Instead of generating economic growth and additional revenues, they are raising taxes to collect money for the budget and then using that money to increase salaries.

But a very simple question arises: what will these higher salaries actually cover? Because we are talking about people’s purchasing power. And I say with full conviction: after these salary increases, against the backdrop of higher taxes and, consequently, more expensive goods and services, people’s purchasing power will be lower than it was before the salaries were increased.

This, essentially, is how the PAS governs,” the politician added.
