During her visit to Strasbourg, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, held meetings with senior officials of the Council of Europe, including the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Petra Bayr, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, the President of the Venice Commission, Marta Cartabia, as well as the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mattias Guyomar, TRIBUNA reports.
The discussions focused on the Republic of Moldova’s progress in strengthening democracy, reinforcing the rule of law, and ensuring respect for human rights — essential priorities for citizens and key conditions in the EU accession process. President Maia Sandu reiterated the authorities’ firm commitment to continuing justice reform, combating corruption, and strengthening state institutions.
The Head of State also drew attention to the increasingly complex threats facing democracies in Europe, including external interference, attempts to undermine electoral processes, and information manipulation. In this context, the President emphasized the need for effective tools that allow democracies to defend themselves without compromising democratic principles.
President Maia Sandu expressed appreciation for the Council of Europe’s consistent support, including the expertise of the Venice Commission and the role of the European Court of Human Rights, highlighting the authorities’ commitment to aligning national legislation with European standards and implementing the Court’s judgments.
