356,833 residents of the Transnistrian region hold citizenship of the Republic of Moldova

According to data provided by the Public Services Agency, as of 31 December 2025, the State Population Register listed 364,885 residents living in the localities on the left bank of the Nistru River and in the municipality of Bender, of whom 356,833 are citizens of the Republic of Moldova, TRIBUNA reports with reference to the Bureau for Reintegration Policies.

Of the total number of registered individuals, 298,851 hold internal identity documents, while 337,516 possess a Moldovan passport.

At the same time, the State Population Register includes 8,052 foreign nationals, including holders of permanent and temporary residence permits, stateless persons, refugees, beneficiaries of humanitarian protection, as well as individuals registered after entering the Republic of Moldova through the Transnistrian region by crossing the Moldovan‑Ukrainian state border.

The increase in the number of registered persons is due, among other factors, to the implementation of Government Decision No. 757/2024, through which the Public Services Agency ensured the initial registration ex officio in the State Population Register of children who did not hold identity documents, at the domicile or temporary residence address of their mothers.

Demographic data indicate a balanced population structure, with 172,943 men and 191,942 women. The age structure shows a predominantly adult population: approximately 60% are between 20 and 59 years old, while people aged 60 and above represent about one quarter of the total — a significant share that confirms the trend of demographic ageing.

The process of documenting residents from the left bank of the Nistru reflects the Moldovan authorities’ continued commitment to facilitating their reintegration into the national legal framework by ensuring access to public services and guaranteeing fundamental rights. At the same time, citizens of the Republic of Moldova benefit from the advantages of the country’s EU candidate status, including freedom of movement within the EU and access to numerous economic, educational, and social opportunities.

According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, the passport of the Republic of Moldova ranks 44th out of 227 countries, allowing its holders to travel visa‑free or with visa on arrival to approximately 120 destinations. Residents of the localities on the left bank of the Nistru and the municipality of Bender also benefit from this.
