The Republic of Moldova has denounced three more agreements concluded with the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The three draft laws for denunciation, prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance, were adopted by Parliament in the second reading, TRIBUNA reports.
Thus, the Agreement on visa-free travel for CIS citizens, signed in Bishkek in 1992, was denounced. According to the authors, the denunciation of this agreement is inevitable in the context of the European Commission’s recommendation. This provision aligns Moldova’s visa policies with the European Union’s list of third countries whose citizens require visas, especially those posing risks of illegal migration or security concerns. At the same time, the denunciation affects only Moldovan citizens traveling to the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, since Moldova has bilateral visa-free travel agreements with most CIS states.
Moldova also denounced the Agreement on the principles of levying indirect taxes on the export and import of goods (works and services) between CIS states, signed in Moscow in 1998.
Another denounced agreement refers to measures to improve settlements between economic organizations of CIS member states, signed in 1992 in Tashkent.
In all cases, the provisions of the agreements are outdated and no longer applicable. Therefore, the opportunity for Moldova to maintain its status as a CIS member state is considered exhausted.
So far, the Republic of Moldova has denounced 67 agreements with the CIS, as part of a continuous process of aligning national policies and modernizing the country’s legislative and economic framework to EU standards and norms.
