Prosecutor’s Office Clarifications: The truck detected at the Leușeni-Albița border contained munitions taken from an unidentified depot in Ukraine

The General Prosecutor’s Office, regarding the truck with armament discovered at the Leușeni-Albița border crossing, announced that within the case investigated by the authorities, a joint working group was created together with Romanian authorities. Criminal investigation actions, as well as the exchange of information and evidence, are to be carried out, TRIBUNA reports.

According to data obtained during the investigation under international cooperation, the following items were established as evidence:

  • 18 type-2 ammunition elements (components of ammunition)
  • 8 type-1 ammunition elements (complete ammunition)
  • A surface-to-air launcher
  • A “Geran 2” drone, consisting of several dismantled elements following its downing, showing fragments at detachment points, with the engine separated — without pyrotechnic elements of interest.

The investigation found that these munitions were smuggled into the territory of the Republic of Moldova with the help of a courier who periodically transported goods by truck from Ukraine. The munitions were brought in through several trips, each involving the transport of two units of ammunition, taken from an unidentified depot in Ukraine from unknown individuals. They were camouflaged and brought into Moldova, from where they were quickly taken over by several accomplices.

The customs export documents were processed for “metal articles” with Israel as the destination. The persons responsible for the export documents and the organization of the export (the exporter/supplier, the customs broker, and the transporter) currently have the status of defendants and are under arrest. All circumstances will be established during the criminal investigation.

It is specified that, based on the preliminary evidence and information obtained in the case, there is no indication that the weapons/munitions originated from military or strategic depots, such as the Cobasna depot or those of the National Army.

“All state institutions are cooperating to ensure the safety of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. There is international cooperation among several institutions so that such cases are investigated with maximum rigor and to ensure that these weapons do not enter international arms trafficking. We remind that this transport was identified at the coordinated border crossing point Leușeni-Albița, located on the Romanian side of the border,” the Prosecutor’s Office communicated.
