Andrei Năstase Calls on Electoral Competitors to Support Reducing the Number of MPs: “We Cannot Keep Maintaining an Oversized and Costly Parliament While People Grow Poorer”

Independent candidate Andrei Năstase has launched the National Pact for a Clean, Efficient, and Accountable Parliament—an initiative urging all electoral competitors to commit to concrete pledges before the citizens. The key measure is reducing the number of MPs from 101 to 61, in line with the February 2019 referendum, TRIBUNA reports.

“This is a clear signal that the will of the people can no longer be ignored. In February 2019, over 73% of voters supported reducing the number of MPs, and more than 79% backed the right of citizens to revoke those who fail to fulfill their duties. The results of this referendum were validated by the Constitutional Court and represent a direct expression of popular sovereignty. Ignoring this decision today is equivalent to contempt for democracy and mockery of those who went to vote,” Năstase stated.

Following the launch of the Pact, several parties and candidates have adopted the goal of reducing the number of MPs in their electoral platforms, confirming growing public pressure to respect the popular will.

In light of recent offensive public statements made by government representatives toward citizens, Andrei Năstase is calling on the Speaker of Parliament—who is also the leader of the ruling party—the President of the Republic of Moldova, and the Prime Minister to publicly present an official stance and firm commitment to implementing the referendum.

“This referendum is not optional and cannot be discarded. It is constitutionally validated and must be enforced. Those who refuse to respect the people’s vote show they fear the citizens and cling to privileges. It’s time for the government to answer unequivocally: do they respect the will of the people or not?” the independent candidate concluded.

Key provisions of the Pact:

  1. Respecting the results of the February 2019 referendum
  2. Reducing the number of MPs from 101 to 61
  3. Eliminating parliamentary immunity as outlined in Article 70 of the Constitution
  4. Transparent and efficient use of public resources, redirecting savings toward education, healthcare, justice, and infrastructure

“In 2015, over 405,000 citizens supported the reduction of MPs through their signatures. We cannot ignore this will. We cannot continue to maintain an oversized and costly parliament while people grow poorer and resources are lacking where they’re most needed,” Năstase emphasized.

He added: “Since 2019, the population’s purchasing power has declined. Even if the government claims that salaries and pensions have increased, the reality shows the country has grown poorer. To improve the well-being of children, grandparents, and ordinary citizens, we must start saving from politicians and unnecessary public institutions.”
