During his working visit to London, Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban met today with EBRD President Odile Renaud‑Basso, TRIBUNA reports.
He expressed his personal gratitude and that of the entire Chișinău community for the EBRD’s strategic support in attracting and implementing the largest infrastructure, mobility and development projects in the capital’s modern history. “Thanks to this strong partnership in recent years, the modernization of the road network and the city’s expansion are advancing at a steady pace,” the mayor stated.
The talks focused on the three major road arteries in which the municipality is currently making substantial investments — all part of the city’s expansion strategy:
- Mircea cel Bătrân Boulevard — Construction and extension works are progressing rapidly. The contract for on‑site works is expected to be signed in July 2026.
- Industrială Street — The public tender is underway. The entire area will be fully rehabilitated and will become a key segment of Chișinău’s future ring road.
- Mesager Street — The municipality is finalizing logistical and administrative steps to launch the tender for another strategic artery essential for easing traffic and enabling development in the Buiucani and Rîșcani sectors.
In parallel with road infrastructure, the mayor highlighted several major environmental and energy‑efficiency initiatives, unique at national level:
- Energy Efficiency in Education — Following extensive thermal rehabilitation of schools, kindergartens and hospitals, a new large‑scale phase will cover another 52 kindergartens, institutions attended by over 75% of the municipality’s children.
- Bîc River Rehabilitation & Flood Protection — A major safety project focused on cleaning and stabilizing the riverbed and modernizing stormwater drainage systems in critical zones.
- Modernization of the Wastewater Treatment Plant — Now in its final construction phase. Thanks to modern technologies, Chișinău has not experienced foul odors for nearly seven years, resolving a long‑standing issue.
- Waste Management — Chișinău is the only city in Moldova implementing a modern, EU‑standard waste‑management system. A key achievement was eliminating the environmental disaster caused by the former illegal dumpsite in Bubuieci–Ciocana.
According to the mayor, all these projects have been initiated and implemented by Chișinău City Hall in recent years. “EBRD support directly contributes to transforming Chișinău into a modern, safe, accessible and European city. Together with my team, we have brought more than 30 major projects to Chișinău, with a total portfolio exceeding 4.5 billion lei. This is a historic achievement, and I say with full responsibility that I am deeply proud of it. Today, Chișinău is the country’s only real development hub,” he said.
Ceban also stressed that these results were achieved despite numerous political, administrative and financial blockages, as well as constant pressure from the central government.
“Moreover, the capital has shown remarkable resilience, successfully managing three major crises: COVID‑19, the refugee crisis and the energy crisis. I am extremely proud of our team — the City Hall team. Only together can we deliver the changes our residents deserve. Together for Chișinău!” the mayor concluded.
