Starting from 10 April, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational at the EU’s external borders (land border points, airports, and seaports). The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, TRIBUNA reports.
The EES is a modern, fully automated and digital electronic tool that replaces passport stamping in most participating European states. The system has been rolled out progressively since 12 October 2025.
The new system aims to modernize and streamline border control, strengthen security within the Schengen area, and prevent irregular stays, without altering existing freedom‑of‑movement rights.
Why is the EES being introduced?
• modernizes border checks and gradually reduces waiting times
• quickly identifies non‑EU nationals who do not meet entry/stay conditions or who exceed the permitted duration of stay in the Schengen area
• contributes to enhancing the security of Europe’s borders
• enables the use of automated border‑control systems for holders of biometric passports (where available)
