Irina Vlah, leader of the Republican Party “Inima Moldovei”, stated that the international recognition of Moldova’s permanent neutrality is more necessary than ever. She noted that for the past two years she has repeatedly made public appeals on this issue and even launched an initiative for a national referendum, which she says was blocked by the authorities.
Vlah argued that the topic is becoming increasingly relevant for several reasons:
She referred to the government’s stated intention to advance a solution to the Transnistrian conflict, mentioning that a document is reportedly being discussed with external partners. According to her, any durable settlement must be based on a solid foundation, and internationally recognized neutrality is the most suitable basis for future guarantees and obligations involving international actors.
Vlah said that the end of the war in Ukraine will require negotiating a broader regional security package with major international actors. Moldova, she argued, must be part of this framework, and international recognition of its neutrality could play a decisive role.
She pointed to tensions between the United States and European NATO members, arguing that the Alliance is going through a difficult period. In her view, any expectation that Moldova could revise its constitutional neutrality and later join NATO is unrealistic. Therefore, she believes that international recognition of neutrality is the only viable path for Moldova’s security.
Vlah concluded that her repeated appeals over the years have been fully justified and urged the government to immediately begin high‑level efforts to secure international recognition of Moldova’s neutrality, stating that “there is no alternative.”
