Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced five urgent measures being taken by the authorities in response to the tragic incident in the village of Măgdăcești, which “has shocked us all.” The crime committed by an aggressor who was subject to a protection order with electronic monitoring is serious and requires urgent action by the state, TRIBUNA reports.

He stressed that nothing can make up for the loss suffered by this family.

“But we will take measures to minimize the risk of similar tragedies happening again. The General Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal case. The head of the National Probation Inspectorate resigned yesterday. I know that these steps are not enough to prevent similar incidents in the future, which is why we will take five urgent measures:

We will introduce a border alert so that the Border Police receives a notification about the aggressor, while the probation service will know in real time when the aggressor leaves the country and when he subsequently returns.

The General Inspectorate of Police will be granted access to the monitoring platform. The two institutions, the GIP and the NPI, will simultaneously monitor alerts, including any possible approach by the aggressor toward the victim.

We will toughen penalties by amending the Criminal Code: violations of a restraining order issued by the police, as well as a protection order issued by a court, will be punished under criminal law rather than only through administrative sanctions.

We must acknowledge that resources are also a major issue. On September 8, the Probation Inspectorate will receive 200 new electronic monitoring bracelets, and in 2027 we will double its budget and provide an additional 4 million lei.
