The leadership of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) held a meeting with Anthony Banbury, President of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), during which the main achievements of the institutional partnership were reviewed and future cooperation priorities were discussed, TRIBUNA reports.
Angelica Caraman, President of the CEC, expressed appreciation for the continuous support provided by IFES, highlighting its significant contribution to the modernization of electoral processes in the Republic of Moldova. In this context, the results achieved with IFES support were emphasized, particularly the implementation of new voting methods—such as voting by mail—carried out within a short timeframe, the organization of electoral dialogues with electoral stakeholders, continuous training for electoral officials and other interested parties, as well as support for the activity of district electoral councils. The CEC leadership also presented the institution’s immediate objectives and priorities related to preparing the next national election.
For his part, the IFES President congratulated the Central Electoral Commission for the results achieved during the last two electoral cycles, praising the institution’s professionalism and its capacity to manage complex electoral processes. Although the elections were positively assessed by the international community, he noted that the scale and complexity of the challenges faced by the CEC were not always fully understood. IFES expressed satisfaction with the strengthened partnership and its readiness to continue providing support.
The meeting also addressed priority areas for future assistance, including strengthening public trust in electoral institutions, ensuring accurate public information in the context of new electoral realities, and combating information manipulation, including through the development of a disinformation registry. The impact of artificial intelligence on electoral processes—both in terms of risks and opportunities—was also discussed. In this regard, IFES will provide the CEC with a recently developed report on the use of artificial intelligence in electoral campaigns.
The importance of exchanging experience and best practices among electoral authorities was also highlighted, with such cooperation increasingly developing horizontally in response to similar challenges and solutions at the international level.
