Irina Vlah, leader of the Republican Party “Heart of Moldova”, has addressed an open letter to Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, calling for a comprehensive investigation into potential external influence on Moldova’s 2024 presidential and 2025 parliamentary elections.
Vlah argues that new information has emerged suggesting possible outside interference, including alleged pressure by the European Commission on digital platforms to restrict online content — claims referenced in a February 3, 2026 report by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. The European Commission has rejected these accusations, though Vlah states that “suspicions remain.”
She also cited an article in the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, which described Moldova’s 2025 parliamentary elections as a “testing ground” for new EU cyber‑diplomacy tools.
According to Vlah, these developments — combined with observers’ assessments that the elections were only partially free and fair, and with alleged abuses against opposition forces — justify an independent review. She emphasized that Moldova, as a sovereign state, must not allow external actors to influence its electoral processes.
Vlah asked the Council of Europe to launch an investigation to determine whether the elections met international democratic standards and to what extent external factors may have shaped the final results.
