The Republic of Moldova launches the process of preparing its second Voluntary National Review on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals

The Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by launching the process of preparing its second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2026 Voluntary National Review will present progress achieved across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and will include an in‑depth analysis of SDGs 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation,” 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy,” 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” and 17 “Partnerships for the Goals.” The drafting process will involve central and local public authorities, the private sector, civil society, academia, and development partners, with support from the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in the Republic of Moldova.

Preparing the 2026 Voluntary National Review represents an important step in strengthening transparency, monitoring progress, and identifying challenges in Moldova’s path toward sustainable, inclusive, and equitable development.

On 30 December 2025, during the meeting of the Sustainable Development Coordination Council, the structure of the 2026 Voluntary National Review was validated, along with the mechanism for establishing focal points within each authority. Consequently, ministries and the National Bureau of Statistics will designate representatives who will serve as focal points in the report‑drafting process.

In this context, the Government of the Republic of Moldova calls on civil society, academia, the private sector, development partners, public authorities, and all interested stakeholders to actively participate in the drafting, consultation, and communication processes related to the second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The report will be presented at the UN High‑Level Political Forum in July 2026, under the theme: “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and for a sustainable future for all.”

The 2030 Agenda was adopted by the Republic of Moldova in September 2015, together with the other 192 UN member states. In 2016, the country completed the nationalization of the SDGs by developing a comprehensive set of monitoring and evaluation indicators, establishing baseline values, intermediate targets for 2023, and final targets for 2030.

The first Voluntary National Review was prepared in 2020 and presented at the 16th session of the UN High‑Level Political Forum, reaffirming Moldova’s commitment to sustainable development.

The preparation of the second Voluntary National Review is coordinated by the State Chancellery, based on Order No. 336 of 19 December 2025 issued by the Secretary‑General of the Government, which approved the activity plan for the process. The main interinstitutional coordination platform is the Sustainable Development Coordination Council.
