The Foreign Affairs Committees of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and the Romanian Senate have approved a joint statement urging the opening of accession negotiations between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union by the end of 2025. The document was signed by Doina Gherman, Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Moldovan Parliament and Vice President of the legislature, and Titus Corlățean, Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Romanian Senate, during a joint session held today in Bucharest, reports TRIBUNA.
The statement emphasizes that the natural place of the Republic of Moldova is within the European Union and highlights the progress made by the country in its EU accession process. These advances were recently confirmed in the European Commission’s Enlargement Report. Accordingly, members of both committees call on the Council to adopt, by the end of 2025, the decision to open negotiations with the Republic of Moldova on Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values, as well as the remaining five clusters, as swiftly as possible.
The signatories reaffirm that EU membership is the only viable path to ensure Moldova’s secure, democratic, and prosperous future, along with freedom and economic, social, and cultural development in a climate of stability and security. They also call on the parliaments and governments of both countries — in Bucharest and Chișinău — to intensify cooperation in order to accelerate the achievement of this shared strategic objective.
“The real advancement of the accession timeline is the strongest argument in Moldova’s efforts to counter the unprecedented intensification of disinformation campaigns, manipulation, and hybrid attacks,” the statement adds.
Lawmakers from Moldova and Romania also urge faster efforts toward Moldova’s gradual and rapid integration into the European Single Market, and stress the need for stronger EU commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and security in its Eastern Neighborhood.
