President Maia Sandu, speaking before the plenary of the European Parliament, stated that Moldova is not alone in defending democracy.
“The European Union has stood by us—financially, technically, and politically. And for that, we are deeply grateful. This solidarity strengthens our ability to protect democracy at home and enables us to contribute to Europe’s collective security. At the same time, Moldova has gained hard-earned experience in countering hybrid threats. And we are ready to share it. Because Moldova already thinks like a member state, acts like a member state—and this is part of Europe’s security,” the President noted.
She added: “Moldova and Ukraine are ready to move forward in accession negotiations, in a merit-based process that reflects each country’s progress. Both our democracies will be safer once we are part of the Union.”
Addressing the citizens of the Republic of Moldova ahead of a decisive election, Maia Sandu said: “Let us be proud that we have built a living democracy and preserved it for three decades—even when some tried to destroy it. We’ve faced many trials and endured. And each time, we emerged stronger. Today, however, our independence and peace are once again being tested: interference in our elections, illegal foreign funding, disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, paid protests, tactics aimed at sowing hatred among people. These are the methods used to try to derail Moldova’s European path. It is up to us whether these pressures succeed in stopping us—or, on the contrary, make us more united and determined. Last year, we showed the world that we can stand tall, through our vote, in the face of much greater forces. Now we must take the decisive step: to elect a Parliament that will lead Moldova into the European Union. This is our responsibility. Moldova’s future depends on the courage and unity with which we go to vote.”
