PSRM: Discrimination against Moldovan citizens living in the Transnistrian region is a crime against one's own people

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), in a statement, states that “the actions of the current government in relation to the inhabitants of Transnistria do not represent politics, but an open mockery of the principles of democracy, human rights and the Constitution”, informs TRIBUNA.

“When the socialists were in power, we – just like the previous governments – were guided by a simple and obvious principle: the two banks of the Dniester represent one country, one people. We did everything possible to strengthen ties and restore the unity of our country. Today, however, Maia Sandu and her party are consciously promoting a policy of segregation, depriving over 260 thousand citizens of the Republic of Moldova of their legal right to vote. This is not just discrimination – it is a crime against their own people.

In this situation, what “European values” can Mrs. Sandu talk about, if 10% of our country’s citizens are excluded from the electoral process for circumstantial reasons? Europe is built on respect for human rights, but the current government has transformed European rhetoric into a meaningless propaganda poster. Moreover, the limitation of the electoral rights of Transnistrians strikes not only at their freedom, but also at the legitimacy of the future Parliament. Even today, grounds are being created for contesting the elections in international courts, and the current ruling clique bears direct responsibility for this” – the socialists noted.

PSRM emphasized that the limitation of the number of polling stations, the blocking of bridges, the involvement of the police, the physical impossibility of participating in the elections – all this turns the upcoming elections into a farce.
