The Head of State met with the Chairman of the Venice Commission, Gianni Buquicchio, who is on a visit to the Republic of Moldova. During the conversation, the President of Moldova and the European official noted the active interaction of the Commission and the leadership of our country regarding implementation of the necessary reforms.
“We have got unanimous opinions that Moldova is one of the most reliable partners of the Venice Commission.
I expressed confidence that with expert support from the Council of Europe Commission, we will be able to find optimal solutions for amending existing legislation when necessary.
I praised the meeting with Mr. Buquicchio at the end of January in Strasbourg, where the Moldovan side confirmed its commitment to the international obligations undertaken to implement the reforms,” the Head of State said.
In turn, the chair of the Venice Commission gave a good assessment of the working meetings held in Chisinau in the Parliament and the Government and expressed confidence in the successful implementation of reforms in our country.
“At the same time, I informed Mr. Buquicchio that I had submitted to the Parliament, as a legislative initiative, a draft amendment to the Law on the Supreme Council of Magistracy based on the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the opinion of the General Directorate for Human Rights and the Legal State of the Council of Europe.
I emphasized that the bill was aimed at bringing the concept of electing the SCM Chairperson in line with international standards. I expressed hope that the project would receive support in the legislative body during the spring session, so that it comes into force in the near future and promotes harmonization with the concept of adjustments proposed by the Ministry of Justice through the bill to amend the Constitution,” said Dodon.
