Irina Vlah, leader of the Republican Party “Heart of Moldova,” has issued a public appeal to Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi, stating that, amid discussions on peace, the Republic of Moldova must become part of the regional security package, and that international recognition of Moldova’s neutrality must be a starting point in all discussions concerning the regional security package.

“Dear Minister of Foreign Affairs,

Over the past few days, there has been an intensification of international efforts to identify a solution to end the war in Ukraine. Envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump have resumed discussions on this matter with officials in Moscow and Kyiv. And although these talks are difficult and at times there is an impression that they could reach an impasse, one thing is certain: there is a fairly strong determination to bring this war to an end. This must also be a signal for the Republic of Moldova, which must become part of the regional security package that will certainly be discussed in the context of ending the war in Ukraine.

Given this situation, Mr. Minister, I urge you to initiate the necessary steps for Moldova to become part of the discussions concerning the regional security package. All the more so because recent developments are favorable in this regard. A new U.S. ambassador, Joseph Burkhalter, is coming to Chisinau. In addition, the new head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Christopher Smith, has recently begun his tenure. You have at least two potential dialogue partners through whom you can make the position of the Republic of Moldova known with regard to the future security package for this part of Europe,” the politician said.

Irina Vlah noted that any potential international initiatives should be based on the wishes of the majority of our citizens, who want the Republic of Moldova to remain a neutral state.

“International recognition of the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova would not only make this constitutional principle functional, but would also ensure peace and the harmonious development of the country for many years to come.

It would also create serious prerequisites for the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian issue. I am certain that international recognition of the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova must be a starting point in all discussions concerning the regional security package that will be negotiated in the context of ending the war in Ukraine,” the political leader added.
