At the invitation of President Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of India, Droupadi Murmu, will pay an official visit to the Republic of Moldova on Monday, 20 July 2026. It will be the first visit by an Indian head of state to Moldova since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of India on 20 March 1992, marking the beginning of a new stage in bilateral relations, TRIBUNA reports.
According to the Presidential Administration, India—the world’s largest democracy, with a population of more than 1.4 billion people—is one of the world’s largest economies and the fastest-growing among the major economies. For the Republic of Moldova, India is an increasingly important strategic partner, with both countries seeking to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, energy, information technologies, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, and education.
Moldovan-Indian relations have gained positive momentum in recent years. In October 2024, bilateral political consultations resumed in New Delhi after a 21-year hiatus. In December 2024, Moldova inaugurated its embassy in New Delhi, an important step toward strengthening political dialogue and promoting the country’s economic interests in the Indian market. In February 2025, India opened its market to Moldovan apples. In the energy sector, the Indian company KEC International, which won an international tender, completed the construction of the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead power transmission line, a strategic project for Moldova’s energy security. The same year, Moldova joined the International Solar Alliance, a global initiative launched by India and France and headquartered in New Delhi, creating new opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy. More than 1,400 Indian students are currently studying at universities in Moldova, most of them at the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, serving as a lasting bridge between the two societies.
During their meeting in Chișinău, Presidents Sandu and Murmu will review the full range of bilateral relations and discuss new areas of cooperation, including expanding access for Moldovan products to the Indian market, attracting Indian investment, and strengthening cooperation in renewable energy and digital transformation.
Following the meeting, President Sandu and President Murmu will make press statements beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The two presidents will also inaugurate the Moldova–India Business Forum, organized by the Investment Agency on the occasion of the visit. The event will bring together business representatives from both countries, with the Indian delegation including around 30 business leaders, to promote trade and investment cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure and construction, manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and the agri-food industry. Media representatives are invited to attend the opening of the forum, which will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Further information regarding participation can be obtained from the Investment Agency.
The visit will also include a meeting between President Droupadi Murmu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, as well as members of the parliamentary friendship group, and a meeting with the Indian community in the Republic of Moldova.
