President Maia Sandu reacted to the severe torrential rains that hit Moldova on Friday, thanking all teams involved in managing the aftermath and urging the Government to take all necessary measures.
Sandu noted that the past 24 hours had been “extremely difficult” for the country, with heavy rains severely affecting dozens of localities, particularly in the Călărași and Ungheni districts. Roads were damaged, train routes were blocked, and households were flooded. The dam in Hîrjauca broke under water pressure, flooding nearby villages. Three trains were temporarily halted, but authorities managed to restore circulation and ensure all passengers reached their destinations safely. Several localities were left without electricity, and teams continue working to stabilize the system.
The President expressed solidarity with the affected communities and thanked emergency responders, firefighters, police officers, road workers, railway staff, medical teams, and energy workers for their overnight efforts. She also acknowledged the support of citizens who stepped in to help.
Sandu stressed that the situation remains serious and requires continuous intervention to protect lives and restore safety and normality in the affected areas. She called on the Government and responsible ministries to assess the damage and provide support where the situation is most severe.
“We stand with the families going through this hardship. With solidarity, rapid interventions, and support measures, we will overcome this difficult moment together,” she said, urging citizens to look after children, the elderly, and vulnerable people and ensure that those around them are safe.
