The Republic of Moldova will join the European Convention for the Protection of Animals during International Transport (revised version) and the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes. The Foreign Policy Committee has approved the advisory opinions regarding the signing of these documents.
The revised version of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals during International Transport establishes legal obligations for the states parties to ensure animal welfare during international transport (by road, rail, sea, or air). Its provisions include rules on temperature, ventilation, access to water and feed, as well as ensuring adequate space in transport vehicles. The original document was signed in 2003 by most European states.
The European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes sets common minimum standards for the protection of animals raised for agricultural purposes (including for the production of food, wool, hides, and fur). It requires appropriate conditions for housing, care, and welfare, regardless of the farming system used, with the aim of preventing unnecessary suffering and harmonizing national legislation with European standards in the field.
The document was opened for signature in 1976 in Strasbourg. Today, the convention includes the main European states, including all EU member states.
