On 8 February 2026, the European Social Democratic Party (PSDE) marked 29 years since its founding. In a public statement, the party emphasized that nearly three decades of political engagement in the Republic of Moldova have included periods both in government and in opposition, with achievements and challenges, but with consistent dedication to citizens and the national interest.
PSDE describes itself as a party with solid political traditions, composed of experienced professionals who have demonstrated the ability to face challenges and deliver concrete results at both central and local levels. The party reaffirms its commitment to social-democratic values and to Moldova’s European path, advocating for a fair, cohesive, and prosperous society.
The statement also notes that PSDE intends to continue playing an important role on the national political scene, promoting citizen‑focused social policies and sustainable development. The party highlights its initiative to launch dialogue with other political forces to consolidate a social‑democratic and pro‑European left-wing bloc, in a context marked by economic difficulties, social pressures, and regional uncertainties.
PSDE is part of the broader European and international social-democratic family, serving as an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES) and a full member of the Socialist International.
The political formation was founded on 8 February 1997 under the name “Movement for a Democratic and Prosperous Moldova.” In 2000 it became the Democratic Party of Moldova, and in 2008 it merged with the Social Liberal Party. Its current name — European Social Democratic Party — was adopted at the Extraordinary 10th Congress on 20 November 2022.
