“Democracy at Home” Party Opposes Alexandru Munteanu’s Appointment: “He Is Not the Right Person for Prime Minister”

The “Democracy at Home” Party states that it is fighting for democracy in the Republic of Moldova and, for this reason, opposes the appointment of Alexandru Munteanu as Prime Minister, TRIBUNA reports.

“PAS carried out the biggest electoral deception by hiding the name of its candidate for Prime Minister during the campaign for the September 28 elections. Voters had the right to know who they were voting for and who would lead the government based on their vote. In democratic European countries, the Prime Minister is usually the leader of the ruling party—like in Romania, Italy, Germany, the UK, and others. This lack of transparency is undemocratic. PAS misled voters by pulling a Prime Minister ‘out of a hat’ who was never mentioned during the campaign. PAS presents Alexandru Munteanu as an expert or technocrat. The Democracy at Home Party believes the government should be led by a political figure who bears responsibility for governance. If PAS thinks that by proposing a non-partisan technocrat it can avoid accountability, it is mistaken,” the party’s statement reads.

PDA further argues that appointing a technocrat or unaffiliated expert is acceptable only for short-term mandates, typically to prepare elections. It is unacceptable for a party that won an absolute majority in Parliament to propose an independent technocrat at the start of its term.

The party considers the idea that a technocrat could govern “scientifically” better than an elected political representative—through whom the people exercise their sovereignty—as undemocratic and totalitarian. Moreover, Alexandru Munteanu is not the right person for the role.

“Although presented as an expert, technocrat, or specialist, Alexandru Munteanu lacks the political experience required of a head of government. He also has no experience in public administration and no understanding of how state institutions function. He doesn’t even know the realities of Moldova, having lived abroad for 20 years. Experience in the private sector is not enough. We do not agree that a country should be run like a corporation. PAS’s governance from 2021 to 2025 had the worst economic results compared to other countries in our region and the rest of the CIS.”
