Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder provided an update on the hydrological situation on the Dniester and Prut rivers. Between August 28 and September 3, the average water inflow into the Novodnestrovsk Reservoir in Ukraine was only 33 m³/s, while water releases were maintained at 60 m³/s in accordance with a decision by the Dniester Commission, reports TRIBUNA.

According to the minister, because more water is being released than is flowing into the reservoir, its water level continued to decline during this period, dropping by another 25 cm to a critical level of 111.72 meters. The main reason is the lack of precipitation in the upper part of the Dniester River basin.

As for the Prut River, during the same period, the average inflow into the Stânca-Costești Reservoir was only 14 m³/s, while releases were maintained at 26 m³/s. As a result, the water level fell by another 28 cm, reaching 83.38 meters.

“Given that the situation remains complicated, we reiterate our call to use water rationally and responsibly until the short- and medium-term hydrological risks have passed.

At the same time, we are identifying and removing illegal dams and structures that block waterways, continuing the cleaning and desilting of internal riverbeds, strengthening the water infrastructure of reservoirs of national importance, and updating data on alternative surface and groundwater sources,” the minister said.
