Ministry of Energy welcomes the introduction in the United States Congress of the bipartisan bill “Promoting Oversight With Energy Resilience for Moldova Act”

Ministry of Energy welcomes the introduction in the United States Congress of the bipartisan bill “Promoting Oversight With Energy Resilience for Moldova Act” (POWER Moldova Act 2026), initiated by Congresswoman Deborah Ross and Congressman Mike Lawler, co-chairs of the Moldova Caucus in the House of Representatives. The initiative aims to strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s energy security and support the country’s efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources.

According to the authors, the bill provides for deeper cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and U.S. energy authorities, monitoring progress in the development of energy infrastructure, and facilitating the exchange of information on modern energy technologies and renewable energy sources. The initiative reflects the bipartisan support Moldova enjoys in Washington and the recognition of the progress achieved in recent years in strengthening energy security.

In recent years, the Republic of Moldova has undergone one of the most significant energy transformations in Europe, substantially reducing its dependence on natural gas and electricity supplies from the Russian Federation, diversifying supply sources, and accelerating integration into the European energy market. These efforts have become even more important in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine and repeated attacks on energy infrastructure in the region.

The United States is one of the Republic of Moldova’s most important partners in the process of strengthening energy security. The U.S. Government has reaffirmed its readiness to provide grant funding for the construction of the 400 kV Strășeni–Gutinaș overhead power line, one of three interconnection lines between the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The announced grant amounts to approximately $130 million, and the project is currently at the stage of preparing a pre-feasibility study.

At the same time, Moldova–U.S. cooperation in the energy sector also includes private investment initiatives in new electricity generation capacities. Last year, a memorandum of understanding was signed with U.S. companies for the development of a natural gas-fired power plant with a total capacity of around 100 MW. The project will contribute to increasing the resilience of the power system and reducing dependence on imports.

The continued support provided by American partners contributes to the Republic of Moldova’s strategic goal of integrating into the European energy market and building a modern, secure, and competitive energy system.
