The General Mayor of Chișinău, Ion Ceban, inspected 31 August 1989 Street today together with the team that will oversee the works and the contractor that won the tender. Repair works are expected to begin in the coming days. The targeted segment is between Alexandr Pușkin Street and Gavriil Bănulescu‑Bodoni Street — the cobblestone area, 300 meters long and covering more than 7,300 m², TRIBUNA reports.
According to the mayor, after years of efforts and increased execution costs caused by project changes, Chișinău City Hall has finally obtained permission to start the works.
“It was not a whim of Chișinău City Hall that this section remained unrepaired for almost three years. The Government and the Ministry of Culture, as well as other structures, intentionally delayed the works. In the coming period, intensive work will be carried out to fully rehabilitate the pavement and road structure, repair sidewalks, create a separate and safe cycling lane, modernize the stormwater drainage system and street lighting, and prune the trees,” Ceban stated.
The rehabilitation will take place on land owned by the municipality. In other areas — such as in front of the “Licurici” Theatre, the National Library, and the fountains near the “Nicolae Sulac” National Palace — the municipality cannot intervene.
“This is why we will ask the Government to join the project, develop a plan, and intervene in these areas,” the General Mayor added.
31 August 1989 Street has previously undergone capital repairs. The project also included the full rehabilitation of Alexandru cel Bun and Tighina streets. The works were carried out under Package II of the project “Rehabilitation of central streets and modernization of public lighting in central Chișinău,” financed by the EBRD and the EIB.
