Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu meets IMF expert team to discuss fiscal reform and macroeconomic policies

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu met today with the team of experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Alina Iancu, who is visiting Chișinău between 7–20 May 2026. Discussions focused on fiscal reform — a key priority for ensuring the sustainability of public finances and the state’s capacity to cover the costs associated with modernization. The sides also addressed macroeconomic policies, monetary policy, financial stability, and capital market development, TRIBUNA reports.

Prime Minister Munteanu emphasized the Government’s determination to advance reforms and maintain active cooperation with the IMF. He noted that, despite the challenging regional context, the authorities remain focused on strengthening economic resilience, improving governance in the public sector, advancing local public administration reform, implementing major infrastructure projects, market liberalization, and digitalization.

“The Government is in permanent dialogue with the IMF and is committed to promoting responsible policies aimed at economic stability, institutional modernization, and strengthening the resilience of the Republic of Moldova. We have ambitious objectives and are determined to achieve them, in partnership with international institutions and with the support of our citizens,” Prime Minister Munteanu stated.

IMF mission chief Alina Iancu welcomed the authorities’ openness to dialogue and cooperation: “We will work together to achieve the common objective we share. There is much to be done, and good cooperation with all institutions is essential.”

The visit of the IMF expert team takes place in the context of negotiations on a new program supported through the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI). The mission will hold discussions with national authorities, assess recent economic developments, update the evaluation of macroeconomic prospects and risks, and review policy and reform priorities with the authorities and other relevant stakeholders. The Policy Coordination Instrument provides for enhanced dialogue between the IMF and member states and confirms the Fund’s support for the policies pursued by the authorities, contributing to strengthening external partners’ confidence and mobilizing additional financing.
