During the parliamentary debates on the Code regulating the organization and functioning of Parliament, an opposition MP was interrupted mid‑speech, and the microphone was switched off by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. The opposition described the incident as an obstruction of the right to free expression and held a press briefing in which it criticized both the manner in which the draft was promoted and its substantive provisions. According to opposition representatives, the parliamentary majority is using the Code to restrict freedom of expression — not only for opposition MPs, but also for the citizens they represent, TRIBUNA reports.
It was also noted that the draft has been criticized in the Government’s own opinion, which raises conceptual objections and flags possible contradictions with the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.
The opposition argues that the initiative does not comply with European recommendations or those of the Venice Commission, particularly regarding the need for broad consensus on a document of such importance.
As a sign of protest against the incident in the plenary session, the entire opposition walked out of the chamber, declaring that such actions are a warning signal about the state of democracy in the Republic of Moldova.
Opposition representatives announced that they will return to parliamentary activity when other items on the agenda are examined.
