In April, Parliament held four plenary sittings totaling nearly 30 hours, during which 30 normative acts were adopted and 39 new draft initiatives entered the legislative procedure.
According to statistical data, MPs adopted 7 decisions and 23 laws last month. Four of these laws were drafted to align national legislation with the European Union acquis, while seven form part of Moldova’s National Plan for EU Accession.
Twenty draft laws were adopted in the first reading.
Among them was a draft law introducing more flexible and rapid mechanisms for state intervention during alert situations or energy crises. MPs also approved, in the first reading, legislative initiatives providing tougher penalties for drug trafficking and for parents who evade child‑support payments.
In April, MPs supported the definitive withdrawal of the Republic of Moldova from the statutory bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States, amended the procedure for appointing members of the National Bank of Moldova’s governing bodies, and removed customs duties on the import of several products from the United States. In the second reading, Parliament also adopted initiatives aimed at gradually eliminating fiscal and legislative discrepancies between the two banks of the Nistru River, requiring food retailers to display the country of origin on shelves, improving the mechanism for voluntary amalgamation of administrative‑territorial units, and approving the new law regulating the activity of zoological gardens.
Before reaching the plenary, legislative initiatives were examined by the standing committees, which held 44 meetings in April. They approved 48 reports, 15 co‑reports, and 88 opinions.
Additionally, parliamentary committees organized 9 public consultations and 3 public hearings on draft normative acts on the Parliament’s agenda and other current issues.
