Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu met today with Marnix van Rij, Alternate Executive Director for the Republic of Moldova at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The officials discussed the current regional context and reviewed the positive conclusions of the IMF mission’s latest report on Moldova, TRIBUNA reports.
The report was examined by the IMF Executive Board on 27 February, which endorsed the launch of discussions on a new program with the Republic of Moldova. Prime Minister Munteanu welcomed the positive assessment of Moldova’s macroeconomic developments and the recommendations formulated by the IMF Executive Board for the period ahead.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Government remains focused on implementing reforms to advance the country’s European path, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen state security and resilience. According to the IMF Report, Moldova is experiencing renewed economic growth after recent years of challenges, supported by structural reforms and increased investment, including assistance from the European Union.
“The economy of the Republic of Moldova is recovering after multiple shocks. We estimate an economic growth rate of 2.7 percent in 2025 and 2.3 percent in 2026, relying on a good harvest, strong domestic demand, and substantial EU financing,” the IMF conclusions state.
The IMF Executive Board positively assessed the implementation of ambitious structural reforms and the maintenance of prudent macroeconomic policies in the context of Moldova’s EU accession path, noting that these efforts will contribute to strengthening stability and improving citizens’ living standards.
The Executive Directors and IMF management also supported the initiation of discussions on a new cooperation program under the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI). Deepening the dialogue with the IMF will help consolidate reforms, strengthen economic resilience, and support Moldova’s European integration efforts.
An important topic of the meeting was the fight against corruption and the combatting of disinformation, which remain key priorities for the Republic of Moldova.
