Giurgiulești International Free Port will benefit from improved conditions for development, investment, and expansion of its logistics capacity, and will be designated as a strategic port infrastructure asset. The Government has approved amendments to the Law on the Port’s Activity to strengthen its role in regional trade and support the national economy, TRIBUNA reports.
The amendments introduce clearer rules for investors and companies operating in the Port. Port management will be improved through a clearer division of responsibilities between the investor and resident companies—each party will have well‑defined obligations, ensuring more transparent and efficient administration.
A key element is the alignment of customs and fiscal rules with European Union standards, which will make the Port more attractive to investors. Importantly, the adopted amendments do not introduce any new taxes or obligations for companies operating in the Port.
Thanks to these changes, the Port will be able to continue operating beyond 2030, when the current regulatory period was set to expire. Activity will continue without interruption, offering long‑term stability for investors.
Giurgiulești Port is Moldova’s main access point to international maritime and river transport. Together with the Giurgiulești passenger and cargo port, it forms the Giurgiulești Port Complex—an essential logistics hub for the country’s external trade. By the end of 2025, the Port had 74 resident companies employing approximately 800 people.
On 31 December 2025, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed an agreement to sell Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulești International Free Port, to Romania’s National Company “Maritime Ports Administration” Constanța.
The new owner has committed to long‑term investments in the Port’s development, including infrastructure modernization, expansion of port capacity, and improved services for operators. The Port will also be more closely integrated into the commercial and logistics network of the Port of Constanța. These improvements aim to transform the Giurgiulești International Free Port into a more competitive and resilient port, fully integrated into European transport corridors.
