As of October 6, 2025, the Republic of Moldova becomes an operational member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) — the infrastructure that connects 41 European countries and enables citizens and businesses to make euro transfers that are fast, secure, and low-cost — sometimes even free, reports TRIBUNA.
“Joining SEPA is a historic milestone for Moldova’s financial system and confirms the country’s European path. This achievement removes administrative barriers and brings European standards directly into the daily lives of Moldovan citizens and businesses,” emphasized Ms. Anca Dragu, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, the institution that coordinated the accession process.
What is SEPA
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a European framework that allows euro transfers between participating countries under the same conditions of cost, safety, and processing time, regardless of borders. It includes all EU member states, the UK, EEA countries, Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican.
Benefits of SEPA for Moldova
For citizens and diaspora families, euro transfers will be faster, safer, and significantly cheaper — sometimes with zero commission, depending on the bank. Previously, international transfers could cost between €20 and €200; now, they will be processed under EU standards for just a few euros or even free.
For businesses, SEPA removes administrative barriers and places Moldovan companies on equal footing with European ones. Over 60% of Moldova’s exports go to the EU, and lower transaction costs enhance competitiveness and facilitate trade and investment. In 2024, around 830,000 euro transactions were made between Moldova and SEPA countries, totaling €11.8 billion — over 3,200 payments daily worth €45 million.
At the macroeconomic level, SEPA integration is expected to generate direct savings of around €20 million — resources that remain in the economy for investment and job creation. It also sends a strong signal of stability and credibility to international partners and investors.
Eight Moldovan banks already in SEPA
Currently, eight commercial banks in Moldova have obtained SEPA Participant status and can process euro payments under EU standards. The National Bank advises clients to check with their banks for specific conditions, fees, and available services (standard or instant payments).
The accession process was coordinated by the National Bank and the Moldovan Bank Association (NASO). More payment service providers, including non-bank operators, may join SEPA in the future, contributing to the modernization of Moldova’s payment market.
Message from the Governor of the National Bank
“This moment is the result of a joint effort: by the teams of the National Bank, the Government, Parliament, and our European and international partners. I thank everyone who helped make this project a reality,” said Ms. Anca Dragu in a video message.
She added: “SEPA is about people, trust, and the future. About families receiving their money on time. About businesses trading in Europe with the same ease and security as anywhere else. About an economy gaining speed, resources, and credibility.”
