The co-rapporteurs for the monitoring committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Egidijus Vareikis and Maryvonne Blondin, will pay a visit to Moldova on 2-5 April 2018, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The visit aims to assess the degree of fulfillment of obligations and commitments taken by Moldova towards the Council of Europe. The officials will collect facts about the political developments in Moldova, preparation of parliamentary elections and legislative amendments related to democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

According to the agenda, the PACE co-rapporteurs will meet Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and President Igor Dodon. It also includes separate meetings with the heads of parliamentary factions – Marian Lupu (Democratic Party), Tudor Deliu (Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova), Mihai Ghimpu (Liberal Party), Inna Supac (Party of Communists), Zinaida Greceanii (Party of Socialists).

The PACE officials will also discuss with CNA director Bogdan Zumbreanu, Head of the Constitutional Court Mihai Poalelungi, General Prosecutor Eduard Harunjen, CEC head Alina Russu and CCA head Dragos Vicol. The PACE co-rapporteurs will also have meetings with Justice Minister Victoria Iftodi, Interior Minister Alexandru Jizdan, representatives of civil society and media, as well as the leadership of several political parties.

Egidijus Vareikis and Maryvonne Blondin will also pay a visit to Comrat to discuss with governor of Gagauzia, head of the People’s Assembly and representatives of the local civil society.

The objective of concluding the Council of Europe’s monitoring procedure of Moldova is a national priority.

Egidijus Vareikis is a lawmaker from Lithuania, European People’s Party, and Maryvonne Blondin is from France, Socialists, Democrats and Greens Group.
