Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu met with Nick Pietrowicz, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Moldova. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the United States in the fields of culture and media, as well as on prospects for developing joint projects, TRIBUNA reports.

An important topic of the meeting was cooperation in the field of cultural heritage preservation, including through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). In this context, the support provided for the restoration of the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” Church in the city of Căușeni was highlighted. The works included archaeological research, masonry reinforcement, roof rehabilitation, and restoration of the mural paintings. The church was reopened to the public in March 2024.

Another project discussed, which is currently underway, focuses on preserving the ruins of the former Beit Kaddishim funeral hall at the Jewish cemetery in Chișinău, with support from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. The project includes research, structural reinforcement, and restoration of the building, followed by the creation of a small memorial museum on the site.

Cooperation in the media sector was also discussed, with an emphasis on supporting independent media, including through programs such as “Supporting Independent Media Grants.” The discussions also covered the possibility of developing new joint projects and facilitating exchanges of experience among media professionals.

Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu expressed appreciation for the U.S. Embassy’s continued support for the development of Moldova’s cultural and media sectors and emphasized the importance of continuing joint projects in these areas.
