Moldova Advances “Liberty Line” Energy Project with U.S. Support

The Republic of Moldova, with the support of the United States, has taken another step forward in the implementation of the strategic “Liberty Line” project, the country’s third high-voltage electricity interconnection with Romania. Yesterday, the feasibility study for the 400 kV Strășeni–Gutinaș overhead power line was presented and handed to Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu by the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, Nick Pietrowicz.

“The strategic partnership with the United States is delivering concrete results for Moldova’s energy security. The feasibility study for the Liberty Line is an important step toward establishing a new energy connection with the European Union and strengthening the resilience of our power system,” Prime Minister Munteanu stated.

The transmission line will be built with a non-repayable grant from the U.S. Government, which has allocated $130 million for the project. It will become the third high-voltage interconnection between Moldova and the European electricity system through Romania, following the Vulcănești–Chișinău and Bălți–Suceava projects.

The project is expected to strengthen Moldova’s energy security, increase electricity import and export capacities, and accelerate the country’s integration into the European energy market.

According to the feasibility study, the 400 kV Strășeni–Gutinaș line will extend for approximately 70 kilometers across Moldovan territory and will pass through 25 localities in the districts of Strășeni, Nisporeni, Călărași, and Hâncești. The project will enhance electricity transfer capacity between Moldova and the ENTSO-E network, improving supply security and supporting the development of a competitive energy market.

The discussions also covered other issues of mutual interest, including recent developments in the energy sector, the expansion of electricity transmission infrastructure, investments in new energy generation and storage capacities, and opportunities to further strengthen Moldovan-American cooperation in the field of energy security.
