The 2026–2027 school year will begin in all public and private general education institutions in the Republic of Moldova with the first thematic lesson, “Independence That Unites Us.” The lesson will take place on September 1, 2026, for students in grades I–XII, marking 35 years since the proclamation of the Republic of Moldova’s Independence, TRIBUNA reports.

The first lesson will give students an opportunity to discover and understand Moldova’s path toward Independence, reflect on the transformations the country has undergone over the past 35 years, and discuss the role of each generation in shaping Moldova’s present and future.

Educational activities will focus on three main areas: “The Road to Independence,” “The Symbols and Values of Independence,” and “Independence That Unites Us.”

Students will explore key events from 1989–1991, the Declaration of Independence, and the major transformations Moldova has experienced between 1991 and 2026. They will also learn about state symbols, the Romanian language, the country’s historical, cultural, and natural heritage, as well as the values underpinning a democratic society.

Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding Independence not only as a historical moment but also as a responsibility shared by every generation. Responsible exercise of freedom, human dignity, peace, solidarity, integrity, civic participation, justice, and the rule of law are among the values that will be addressed during the activities.

The lesson will invite students to reflect on questions such as: What does Independence mean to us today? How do we build Independence together? How can each of us contribute to the country’s development? How does the younger generation envision the future of the Republic of Moldova?

To support teachers in organizing the lesson, the Ministry of Education and Research, with the support of the Council of Europe, has developed a set of teaching materials adapted to students’ ages and educational levels. The materials include suggested activities and learning tasks that can be tailored to the context of each class and community.

Teachers will also be able to participate in workshops dedicated to organizing the first thematic lesson, where the materials and ways of using them in the classroom will be presented.

The first lesson, “Independence That Unites Us,” is part of activities dedicated to the Decade of Education for National Values. It aims to create, at the beginning of the new school year, a space for intergenerational dialogue, reflection on the values that unite Moldovans, and a shared commitment to taking responsibility for the country’s future.
