The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) welcomed the decision of the European Union, communicated through the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council, confirming that the Republic of Moldova is sufficiently prepared to open negotiations on Cluster 1 “Fundamentals.”
According to the party’s statement, the invitation for Moldova’s authorities to present their negotiation position is an important step forward, but the final political decision must be taken at the EU summit scheduled for June 18–19.
LDPM insists that the government must ensure public access to negotiation mandates and Moldova’s positions in the accession process, with exceptions only when necessary to protect national interests. The party stressed that society has the right to fully know the government’s objectives, the limits of negotiations, the commitments being undertaken, and the extent to which Moldova’s strategic priorities are safeguarded.
The statement emphasizes that this demand is not a political whim or tactical maneuver, but a necessary condition for the democratic legitimacy of European integration. Moldova’s European future cannot be discussed behind closed doors and later presented to citizens as a set of already‑made decisions. Publishing negotiation mandates is seen as a crucial test of transparency, institutional responsibility, and openness of the authorities.
LDPM also expressed hope that the advancement of negotiations will prompt European institutions to pay closer attention to Moldova’s internal political processes. European reforms, they argue, are incompatible with authoritarian tendencies, excessive concentration of power, use of state institutions for political purposes, or constant changes to electoral legislation based on political convenience. Cluster 1 covers key areas of democratic governance: rule of law, judicial independence, protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, functioning of democratic institutions, and public administration reform. Therefore, Moldova’s progress must be assessed strictly and objectively, based on real results rather than formal reports or political declarations.
The party underlined that the start of full negotiations must be accompanied by a clear reform strategy with measurable goals, realistic timelines, and specific responsibilities. Citizens should understand what changes are planned, when they will be implemented, and how they will affect daily life.
“Accession to the European Union represents a historic opportunity for Moldova’s deep modernization: strengthening democratic institutions, developing the economy, creating jobs, ensuring citizens’ rights, and bringing public services closer to European standards. European integration is neither an electoral slogan nor a tool to legitimize any particular government,” LDPM declared.
The party concluded: it supports European integration, but rejects turning this process into political propaganda or a monopoly of any party. EU accession is a national project that must serve the interests of the entire society.
