President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, participated alongside the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, in the conference “Roma and the Future of Work: A Social Rights Perspective”, where she addressed the challenges and progress related to Roma inclusion, TRIBUNA reports.
The President noted that discrimination against Roma communities remains widespread in many European states, including Moldova — a reality also reflected in the Council of Europe Secretary General’s 2025 report. In this context, she emphasized the need for more concrete and better‑targeted measures to support Roma integration into the labour market, as well as initiatives dedicated to young people and entrepreneurship. She also stressed that the green and digital transitions must be inclusive, ensuring that all citizens — regardless of origin — benefit from European integration.
“Roma inclusion should not be seen as a problem to be solved, but as an obligation rooted in respect for human dignity. At the same time, it is an opportunity to harness the potential of every Roma person for the common good of society,” the President stated.
Maia Sandu also underlined the importance of promoting Roma culture as a way to combat prejudice, recalling that Moldova has organized Roma Week in educational institutions for the second consecutive year.
In closing, the President expressed confidence that the conference discussions will help identify effective solutions for building a more equitable society in which Roma people are respected and feel respected.
