Vlad Filat: Until the purchase price becomes the regulator’s central concern, every bill will continue to include the price of silence

“Dear citizens! Today, when you look at your natural gas bills, you are genuinely shocked. Next come the bills for electricity and district heating, and the pressure on families will grow even more. That is why I ask you to carefully review the chart published on February 6 and recall the analyses from January and February, in which I explained step by step what is happening behind these tariffs,” stated Vlad Filat, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, TRIBUNA reports.

The former prime minister explained “briefly, the essence of the problem”:

  • Between 2023 and 2025, citizens of the Republic of Moldova paid over 544 million USD more for natural gas than the average price in the European Union.
  • In 2025, precisely when gas prices were falling in the EU, in Moldova the purchase price increased, reaching about 26% above the European average.
  • At the same time, data on the purchase price were hidden, and public oversight was eliminated.
  • ANRE did not intervene, even though the price deviations were obvious and persistent.

“The numbers are simple and must be stated directly. The 104 million USD overpaid in 2025 alone means roughly 2 lei for every cubic meter of gas. This money did not go into investments, salaries, or pensions — it disappeared into opaque procurement schemes, which I have been speaking about publicly since January,” he noted.

Vlad Filat also presented a conclusion “that everyone can understand”:

“Today, on a gas bill of 1,000 lei, approximately 150 lei represent payment for the dubious procurements of 2025. Not for consumption, not for transportation, not for taxes — but for the lack of transparency and institutional silence.

This is not an isolated mistake. It is a system. And until the purchase price becomes the regulator’s central concern, every bill will continue to include, alongside the gas consumed, the price of silence.”
