The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports that in recent hours, strong winds, sleet, and snowfall have created traffic difficulties and affected several localities across the country. Roads have become icy, and wind gusts of 15–20 m/s were recorded nationwide.
Traffic and Restrictions
For drivers’ safety, on 8 January temporary restrictions were imposed on truck traffic:
- Palanca and Tudora border crossing points — truck transit suspended;
- Costești BCP — truck entry restricted;
- R‑30, Anenii Noi district, Troița Nouă area — truck circulation temporarily halted.
On the morning of 9 January, on the Balcani highway near Grătiești, a truck overturned. It is loaded, making evacuation difficult, and traffic is currently diverted along the shoulder.
At this time, national and regional roads remain passable, with no major blockages.
Emergency Calls and Interventions
On 8 January, the 112 Service received 168 calls, and rescue and firefighting teams carried out 88 interventions, including:
- freeing blocked vehicles;
- removing trees knocked down by strong winds;
- assisting citizens in difficulty.
Between 8 January and 9 January 2026, 08:00, police responded to 166 road accidents caused by adverse weather conditions. Four people sustained injuries, while most incidents resulted only in material damage.
Roads and Maintenance Equipment
Since the evening of 8 January, 261 road maintenance vehicles and 218 workers have been deployed, using 2,157 tonnes of salt and anti‑skid materials. In Chișinău municipality, Î.M. “Exdrupo” teams cleared roads and pedestrian areas.
Air Transport and Electricity Supply
Weather conditions also affected air travel: several flights to and from Istanbul, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Tel Aviv were delayed or cancelled. Chișinău Airport is operating normally, with runways cleared.
Due to the weather, 1,075 consumers temporarily lost electricity. By the morning of 9 January, all localities had been reconnected.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to monitor the situation and intervenes in cooperation with authorities and emergency services.
