For the first time, the Republic of Moldova has been elected as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the 2025–2029 term. The elections took place during the 43rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference, TRIBUNA reports.
The Executive Board is one of UNESCO’s main governing bodies. It implements the decisions of the General Conference, oversees the organization’s program execution, formulates recommendations on the admission of new member states, and plays a key role in the selection and appointment of the Director-General. The Board may also convene extraordinary sessions and international conferences dedicated to UNESCO’s core areas: education, science, culture, and communication.
Moldova’s election to this body reflects the country’s strong commitment to the values and principles promoted by UNESCO. Through this mandate, the Republic of Moldova aims to actively contribute to strengthening international cooperation in the organization’s fields of activity, as well as promoting intercultural dialogue and free access to information.
“This election confirms international recognition of Moldova’s efforts to promote quality education, protect cultural heritage, and advance science and innovation. The mandate within UNESCO’s Executive Board is an important opportunity to contribute, alongside our partners, to strengthening the values of an open society based on knowledge and mutual respect,” stated Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi.
With this achievement, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its active and constructive international profile, demonstrating that the values of education, science, and culture remain essential for sustainable development and for positioning the country as a reliable partner within international organizations.
