Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi participated in the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace, education, culture, and respect for diversity, and highlighted the role of multilateral diplomacy in a time of major global challenges and transformations.
“Peace is not an abstract concept. It lies at the core of UNESCO’s mandate, and Moldova’s commitment to peace, democracy, and human dignity is deep and unwavering,” stated the Moldovan foreign minister.
Popșoi condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, noting its devastating impact on humanity and the international order. He also highlighted Moldova’s efforts in managing the refugee influx, with a focus on protecting children and ensuring their access to education and social services.
In the face of information manipulation and malign foreign influence, including in the Transnistrian region, Popșoi stressed UNESCO’s role in promoting media literacy, developing critical thinking, and safeguarding press freedom.
“In times of crisis and uncertainty, truth and education become the most powerful tools for defending democracy,” he emphasized.
He also acknowledged UNESCO’s leadership in areas such as cultural heritage protection, responsible use of artificial intelligence, ecological education, and the preservation of Gagauz culture and language.
Moldova reaffirms its determination to deepen cooperation with UNESCO, including by advancing the national dossier for the inclusion of new sites — the underground wineries of Cricova and Mileștii Mici — on the World Heritage List.
Minister Popșoi emphasized that even small states have a voice and can significantly contribute to shaping the organization’s direction. Moldova’s previous candidacy for a seat on UNESCO’s Executive Board is proof of its readiness to strengthen the organization and promote its core values.
Moldova’s participation in the General Conference reflects the country’s firm commitment to UNESCO’s values and objectives, and its will to actively contribute to an international order based on peace, dialogue, and mutual respect.
