PLDM: We Will Advocate for a Genuine European Path Based on Objective Assessments, Clear Conditionality, and Concrete Results—Not Political Compliments

The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) views the presentation of the European Commission’s 2025 Enlargement Package as a key moment in the country’s European integration process and reaffirms its strong commitment to Moldova’s accession to the European Union—an endeavor it sees as both a strategic and civilizational choice.

At the same time, PLDM expresses deep concern over the way the European Commission has evaluated Moldova’s progress, describing the approach as overtly politicized, excessively optimistic, and lacking objectivity.

PLDM rejects the notion that Moldova is a model of pro-European stability or a flagship of the Eastern Partnership. In reality, the party argues, justice remains politically subordinated, institutional independence is severely compromised, and democratic oversight mechanisms have been replaced by administrative obedience and propagandistic communication. Brussels, they say, is turning a blind eye to critical voices denouncing how the PAS government and President Maia Sandu are undermining the rule of law.

“Moldova faces deep economic challenges: a weak, import-dependent internal market, an inefficient bureaucracy, and high levels of corruption masked by formal anti-corruption rhetoric. While the European Commission speaks of ‘positive assessments’ and ‘significant progress,’ citizens experience a different reality—marked by rising prices, poverty, depopulation, and labor exodus, with the sense that the state serves a narrow political elite rather than the people.”

PLDM warns that European integration must not become a political reward for PAS and the current leadership, but rather a genuine path of reform and progress. The Commission, they argue, is wrong to treat Moldova as a special and privileged case, as this risks undermining the credibility of the EU accession process should PAS lose political power. Moldova needs a realistic accession process, grounded in clear conditionality and rigorous monitoring of government commitments.

According to the party, reforms cannot be credible as long as they are monopolized by a single political force and used as electoral tools. Justice reform, anti-corruption efforts, and press freedom must become areas of national consensus—not political battlegrounds. True European integration is built on dialogue, pluralism, and respect for human rights—not on opposition exclusion, media intimidation, and institutional control.

“The European Commission has a moral and political obligation to assess Moldova’s situation realistically—not through the lens of government declarations, but through the real impact of reforms on citizens’ lives. Brussels’ current indulgence, driven by geopolitical considerations, risks compromising the merit-based credibility of the EU enlargement process.”

PLDM concludes by reaffirming its commitment to a genuine European path—one based on objective evaluations, clear conditions, and tangible results, not political flattery.

“Only through such a process can Moldova become a fully integrated, respected, and dignified EU member—not a student repeating lessons without understanding or applying them,” the party emphasized.
