34 Years of Independence

The Republic of Moldova marked 34 years since the proclamation of independence. On this occasion, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, President Maia Sandu, and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu laid flowers at the “Mourning Mother” monument at the Eternity Memorial Complex and at the monument to Prince Stephen the Great and Holy, and delivered congratulatory messages. Several political parties — the Patriotic Electoral Bloc of Socialists, Communists, Heart of Moldova and Future of Moldova, the European Social Democratic Party, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, and the “Moldovans” Alliance — also laid flowers at the monument to Stephen the Great and sent congratulatory messages.

European Leaders in Chișinău

Moldova celebrated its 34th Independence Day with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Chișinău — three European leaders who came to express their firm support for Moldova’s European future. They were welcomed by President Maia Sandu at the Presidential Palace, where they later held a joint press conference. In the evening, the four officials appeared on the stage in the Great National Assembly Square, congratulating citizens and expressing support for Moldova’s European path. Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk delivered speeches in Romanian.

AUR’s Position

On Moldova’s Independence Day, the leadership of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians in Moldova issued a solemn appeal to the international community. During an event in Chișinău, AUR Moldova President Boris Volosatîi read a Manifesto reaffirming what the party described as the unjust nature of the border between Moldova and Romania imposed by the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and called for recognition of the Romanian people’s right to national unity.

Renato Usatîi’s Appeal

Party of Our Own leader Renato Usatîi publicly called on citizens to examine his party’s list of candidates for the September 28 parliamentary elections after the Central Electoral Commission officially registered the party for the electoral race. That evening, Usatîi also joined residents of Bălți at a concert dedicated to Independence Day.

Launch of the Almanac “The Name of a Conscience”

On Moldova’s Independence Day, the almanac The Name of a Conscience was launched, a reference work prepared by political analyst Igor Volnițchi and his team. The event, moderated by the almanac’s compiler, brought together prominent figures from the country’s cultural, civic, and academic life, as well as guests from Romania, representatives of the Moldovan diaspora, and local mayors and councillors from across the country. The volume contains key chapters from Andrei Năstase’s civic activity and career, previously unpublished interviews, archival documents, and reflections and opinions by personalities from Moldova and abroad.

The Socialists’ Campaign

On Independence Day, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova launched the national campaign “Clean the Country of PAS”, which was to run until September 28, election day. PSRM activists and members of the Young Guard went into courtyards, parks, streets, towns, and villages to collect rubbish — a symbolic gesture representing liberation from what they described as the chaos and destruction caused by PAS. In Chișinău, clean-up activities also took place in front of the PAS headquarters and the Central Electoral Commission.

Parliament Building Illuminated

To mark the 34th anniversary of Moldova’s independence, the Parliament building was illuminated in the colors of the national flag. The initiative symbolized national unity and solidarity, as well as gratitude to those who fought for Moldova’s independence.

Police Statement

At the end of the day, the National Police announced that the Independence Day events had taken place without incidents and thanked the more than 90,000 citizens present in the capital, as well as several thousand people attending events in other localities, for behaving responsibly. Police also said there had been attempts to disrupt events, block routes, and cause disorder. Thanks to the prompt response and cooperation of law-enforcement institutions, more than 90 people of interest were taken to police stations, and their intentions were prevented and deterred.

“Heart of Moldova” in Naslavcea

In Naslavcea — a symbolic location near the “Heart of the Dniester,” where Irina Vlah had launched her 2024 presidential campaign — the team of the Republican Party “Heart of Moldova” began its “journey toward a strong, prosperous and truly independent Moldova.” The party presented a public commitment to free Moldova from what it called “captivity,” signed by its parliamentary candidates as part of the Patriotic Electoral Bloc of Socialists, Communists, Heart of Moldova and Future of Moldova.

Request by People’s Assembly of Gagauzia Deputies

People’s Assembly of Gagauzia deputies Alexandru Tarnavschi and Mihail Jelezoglo asked the Executive Committee to approve the date of the regional legislative elections — November 16, 2025 — after the legal deadline for setting the date had expired.
