Next parliamentary polls to be held in Moldova on 24 February 2019

The next parliamentary elections will take place on 24 February 2019, under a today decision passed by the parliament with the votes of the majority of the MPs present at the meeting.  

The document was presented by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu.

The parliamentary majority proposed the day of the new polls, reasoning that more time is needed to organize the parliamentary elections based on the new mixed electoral system.

„We need additional time to prepare the institutions, accumulate the necessary financial means to this end and to inform the voters from the country and the Diaspora. The present decision will enter into force on 1 December, this year,” Candu said.

The mandate of the present parliament expires on 1 December 2018.

The last parliamentary elections took place on 30 November 2014.

According to the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Code, the parliamentary polls are held in three months after the expiration of the previous parliament’s mandate or after its dissolution at the latest. At the same time, the date of the parliamentary elections is established by parliament decision 60 days before the polls at the latest.

The new electoral system sees that 50 MPs will be elected according to party lists and another 51 based on the uninominal vote.
