Socialists demand to examine bill on mixed electoral system in Parliament

The Socialist parliamentary group said it drafted a legislative initiative in support of the proposals formulated by President Igor Dodon concerning the mixed-member electoral system. The Socialists will register the bill as a matter of urgency and demand to examine it in Parliament, IPN reports.

In the nearest future, the Party of Socialists (PSRM) will distribute the bill to all the diplomatic missions working in Moldova and to all the international organizations that supervise or take part in the electoral process in Moldova one way or another.

The Socialists call on the international organizations, first of all the European Union, to influence the Democratic Party to renounce the intention to introduce the uninominal voting system. Also, the PSRM warns all the international organizations that if the bill proposed by Vlad Plahotniuc and the Democratic Party is adopted, it will not take part in the future parliamentary elections and will block these elections by all possible means.

President Igor Dodon suggested introducing the mixed-member electoral system according to which half of the MPs will be chosen based on party lists, while the other half by constituencies. In a news conference on April 18, the Head of State said he will not allow the uninominal voting system proposed by the Democratic Party led by Vlad Plahotniuc to be implemented in Moldova.
