Number of Mayors’ Offices in Moldova to Fall from 898 to 292

The number of mayors’ offices in the Republic of Moldova is expected to decrease from 898 to approximately 292 by 2027, TRIBUNA reports.

A total of 561 mayors’ offices in Moldova have adopted final decisions on voluntary amalgamation, representing 63% of all mayors’ offices in the country. Of those that have adopted final decisions on voluntary amalgamation, 65.3% have populations of fewer than 3,000 residents.

The next stage will involve 254 mayors’ offices, which will undergo normative amalgamation. Mayors’ offices serving populations of more than 3,000 residents will not be required to participate in the process; for them, amalgamation will remain optional.

The results were presented today by Alexei Buzu, Secretary General of the Government.

In September, public consultations will be held on the legislative package concerning normative amalgamation. Subsequently, the package is expected to be submitted to Parliament for adoption in the autumn of this year.
