Igor Grosu: Independence belongs to all of us — let us cherish it, protect it and take pride in it

Igor Grosu, President of the Parliament, said that today he was deeply moved and proud to stand alongside the founding figures of the Republic of Moldova, in the hall where, 35 years ago, on August 27, 1991, our history was made, TRIBUNA reports.

According to him, then-President Mircea Snegur declared: “The time has come to do justice to our people. Long live independent Moldova.” The words “Long live independent Moldova” also echoed in Great National Assembly Square, where tens of thousands of people from across the country gathered and demanded that their country become independent.

“This chapter in the history of our state was the crowning achievement of 277 worthy deputies who, at a turning point, had the courage to proudly sign in favor of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova. In that hall, the deputies of the first Parliament chose freedom and democracy.

As a historian, I know that 35 years in the life of a state is not very long, but from a demographic perspective, it is the age of a generation. An entire generation was born and grew up in the Republic of Moldova. Over these years, we have learned, sometimes the hard way, what it means to be an independent state, to know our history and strengthen our own identity.

Independence belongs to all of us. Let us rejoice in it, protect it and cherish it, young and old alike, regardless of the language we speak or where we come from.

Independence unites us, and that is how it must always remain,” the Speaker of Parliament emphasized.
